You can take ibuprophen. Call your dentist and ask to tell you how many ibuprophen is safe to take, because it is normally more than written on the instruction. You can also put ice indirectly on your cheek over that tooth to reduce the inflamation. The penicillin will work but it will take time. From my own experience it is the worst pain i've ever had, but take my word on it and call your dentist... cause when i did mine told me to take like 800 mg ibuprophen and that finally worked for me.
Normally antibiotics take three days before you feel noticeable effect or relief. If ibuprofen or NSAIDs doesn't work, you can ask you dentist if you can take some other medication instead, like Tramadol. It is much stronger and it can be recommended to use only if the pain is really unbearable. Good luck!
